![]() ![]() The standard engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder (170 horsepower, 203 pound-feet of torque) matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Three engines are offered on the Equinox. An engine stop-start system that cannot be disabled and disappointing materials quality also might give prospective buyers pause. Be careful, however: Once you start checking the options boxes, the Equinox can be substantially more expensive than rival crossovers. At one end of the spectrum is a fuel-efficient diesel that achieves 32 mpg in combined driving (the standard engine earns 28 mpg) at the other, a turbocharged 2.0-liter with an additional 80 horsepower. We also like that the Equinox offers two alternative powertrains if you aren't satisfied with the base turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. Also available are a panoramic sunroof, a surround-view parking camera and ventilated front seats - rare options in this class. Unlike some competitors, most of these features can only be ordered on the top trim level, but at least you can get them. As such, all the latest safety features are available, from a surround-view parking camera to forward collision warning system that can identify pedestrians. The Snugride was particularly difficult to click in each time.Redesigned just last year, the Equinox is one of the newer entries in this segment. It’s possible that I’d have been able to get all three rear-facing, but I didn’t have time to try that setup. In the Frontier / Snugride / Size4Me installation, I had the outboard seats forward-facing and all three seats were seat belted, of course. The center Radian can definitely be installed rear-facing, but you might need to install the outboard seats in forward-facing configurations. I was able to do it, but some folks have had trouble with it. ![]() The way the seat hinge is oriented in the back seat, you might have trouble installing multiple Radians rear-facing. As usual, to maximize the available amount of space for your installations, you’ll want to make use of seat belts instead of the LATCH anchors. This generation of the Chevrolet Equinox is 188 inches long and 72 inches wide, which means you’ll have a comparable amount of space for 3 across installations as what you’d find in the average mid-sized SUV or car.
